Dog-Friendly Normandy Gite

In a recent post I wrote about why Eco-Gites of Leanult is great for toddlers.  Today I want to show you why we also make a make a good location if you want to bring your dog on holiday to France.

Dog-Friendly Normandy Gite

Local walks starting right at our gate

An extensive network of paths start right at our back gate and we can help you plan a walk of what-ever length you and your 4 legged friends like.  We also have maps and walks leaflets you can borrow.  For beach walks our nearest beaches are an hour away on the Calvados coast and dogs are allowed on all beaches between October and May.  Some beaches allow dogs all year round and this page (in French) shows which Calvados beaches are totally dog-friendly.

Getting here

If you are travelling to France from the UK there are several options that allow you to bring dogs.  All the ferry companies take dogs and where-as in most instances the dog will have to stay on the car deck, you will be allowed down at one point in the journey to check on them.  If you travel into Le Havre (1 hr 10 mins from Eco-Gites of Lenault), Brittany Ferries have 13 pet freindly cabins on their ferry, Etretat, with a designated outdoor exercise area.  There are details on this page, down the right hand side.  For guests using Brittany Ferries we have a discount code to give you 20% off your crossing.  Please ask when booking.

Dogs are also allowed on Le Shuttle (Channel Tunnel) and we are 4 hours from the Calais terminal.

When bringing dogs from the UK/Eire to France they must be microchipped, have a valid pet passport and have been treated for rabies.  More details can be found on this UK Gov Pet Travel page.

Help with Visiting the Vet

If you are taking your dog back to the UK after your holiday you will need to visit the vet 1-5 days (24-120 hours) before your return for a general check up and tapeworm treatment.  We are happy to arrange an appointment with our local vet, who speaks enough English for you to be understood if your French is a bit rusty.

Doggy welcome basket

Whilst we ask you to bring your dog's bed so they have something familiar to sleep in you'll find some canine goodies in your welcome basket on arrival.  We can also supply old towels should you need to dry pooch off and you have access to a hosepipe if they get really dirty!  We have loads of water bowls if you forget yours and so long as Saari, our dog has not lost them all, we have a good supply of tennis balls for throwing games.

Dog Sitting

As dogs can become stressed if left in an unfamiliar place, such as the gite, we ask that dogs are not left alone there when you go out.  We can help with looking after your dog at certain times so please ask and we'll do our best to to dog sit when we can and providing your dog gets on well with our dog.

The small print

We welcome up to 2 well behaved dogs to our smallholding.  Because we have other guests who do not have dogs we do ask you and your dog to follow a few basic rules which are detailed here.    We do not have a totally enclosed garden but we are 300m from the nearest road, which itself is very quiet.  We have our own very friendly dog, Saari, 4 cats who tend to go everywhere (although are not allowed in the gite) and farm animals including poultry, pigs and sheep.  None of these are free range, they are all in fenced fields.

Please do ask away of you'd like to bring your dog on holiday to Eco-Gites of Lenault.  You can either send a message via our enquiry form (link at the top of the page) or telephone on 0033 231 09 27 51 (up to 8pm UK/9pm French time).  Please do make that booking as Saari is busy waiting for some playmates!
